Dr. Hugo E.M. Vereecke (°04/07/1972) became a medical doctor at the Ghent University, Belgium (1997) and consultant anesthesiologist (2002) at the University Hospital Ghent, Belgium.
After finalizing his PhD Thesis (2007) on improving anesthetic drug titration using neuro-physiological monitoring, he proceeded an academic career at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) (2010-current), the Netherlands, where he became an assistant professor in anesthesia (2012-current).
He is involved in multiple study-projects related to anesthetic pharmacology, such as: the improvement of pharmacokinetic-dynamic models for anesthetic drugs; using interaction models to predict responsiveness during anesthesia; exploring the use of electroencephalographic derived information to individualize titration of anesthetic drugs.
Dr. Hugo E.M. Vereecke currently combines his academic position with a clinical consultancy at the general hospital AZ Sint-Jan Brugge-Oostende AV, Brugge, Belgium (2016-current). He is an experienced lecturer and educator in his domain of expertise. He is co-promotor of several PhD’s and masterthesis. He volunteered in several professional societies and committees: the medical ethical
committee (2014-2016), the sedation committee (2012-2016) and chair of the incident notification commission (2012-2016) at the UMCG, program director, co chair and chair of the scientific programs of several annual meetings of ISAP (San Diego (2015) , Chicago (2017), New Orleans (2022) and the virtual meetings during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and 2021. He is the former treasurer
(2017-2018), secretarial officer (2018-2019), vice-president (2019-2020), president-elect (2020- 2021), and president (2021-2022) of the International
Society of Anaesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP). He was active member of forum 1 of the European Society of Anesthesia and Intensive care (ESAIC) (2018-2023). He is a board member of EuroSIVA(2023-current). His publication list includes peer reviewed research papers, book chapters and
editorials in several national and international scientific journals.
EuroSIVA in Abu Dhabi: A Successful First Step ✨
On 14 September 2025, EuroSIVA had the privilege of participating in the Abu Dhabi Annual Anesthesia Congress (ADAAC), organized in conjunction with the Euro-Abu Dhabi Intensive Care Congress. For the first time in the Middle East, we hosted a TIVA/TCI Workshop at the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers. The program included lectures on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, EEG monitoring, and drug interactions, as well as sessions on PK/PD modeling, TCI in special populations (children, elderly, obese), and practical exercises with TCI pumps
